About My Journey
The complex combination of adversity, death and pre and post death care, which I have been privy to through the shared life experiences of so many beautiful people, has allowed me insight into how immensely painful and sacred the various grief journeys can be, an insight for which I am deeply thankful.
I have always had an interest in humanity and the workings of the mind. So it was that in 2008 I started with my Diploma at SACAP (South African College of Applied Psychology) in Counselling and Communication. I graduated from here in 2010 and my elective modules were in grief and loss, addiction, trauma and adolescence.
The two modules which fired my soul were the modules on Grief and Loss and Trauma, often so very intertwined. Post my graduation I had experiences with special needs children and their families, became affiliated with a funeral home as a part time undertaker, palliative and end of life care, and counselling in my private capacity.
I am registered with The Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners (ASCHP) focusing on grief and loss, suicidal grief, advanced death care planning, palliative and end of life care.
My work in bereavement has highlighted a lack of education in society which focuses on the process of grieving and how loss impacts everyone uniquely, without a set time frame. Loss permeates throughout out life and is not only related to death, but to many aspects of the phases of life and often people are unaware that there may be cumulative losses that they haven’t yet acknowledged.
It is both my goal and privilege to provide companionship and compassionate guidance to the bereaved as they adjust to their loss. A deep understanding of the many kinds of losses and how each individual responds differently thereto allows me to create a non-judgemental space within which the grief process can be navigated.
My therapeutic approach
I am a great believer in continuous learning and am constantly availing myself of the wisdom of others through reading and relevant courses.
My therapeutic approach combines the benefits of wellness therapy and holistic counselling which considers all aspects of the client – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. I strive to create an environment for each client which, influenced by Carl Rogers, offers unconditional positive regard, empathy and the empowerment to rediscover their internal resilience and wisdom.
